Patients with abscesses should have incision and drainage performed if antibiotics alone may not be sufficient for treatment. Abscesses can be diagnosed by physical examination based on visible signs on the skin like swelling, pain, redness, bloatedness, and so on. This procedure drains the pus from the abscess. No matter the appearance, the treatment remains similar. The diagnosis of a skin abscess is the first step to preventing infection.
